In a statement, the commission said social media users should be polite and tolerant when giving their views online.

The MCMC said it would continue to curb the spread of false information or statements that touch on the 3Rs – royalty, race and religion.

It reminded netizens that they could be charged under Section 233 of the MCMC Act if they were found to have posted or shared content that was false, offensive, or menacing.

“If convicted, one can be fined a maximum of RM50,000 or jailed one year, or both,” it said.

The MCMC added that it would be acting on complaints from the public according to the various provisions of the law to ensure public peace.

“Incidents or content that touch on the 3Rs on social media can be reported to the MCMC through our online portal at https://aduan.skmm.gov.my/. People can also report any false news through https://sebenarnya.my/salur/.”

Polling day for GE15 has been set for Nov 19, while early voting will be held on Nov 15.

Earlier, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, urged election candidates and party supporters to act in a civil and respectful manner throughout the campaign period.

The King also called on election candidates and party supporters to engage in healthy campaigns for the nationwide polls.
