
The proposed amendments, expected to be in force next year, include protection measures for refunds, passenger entitlement, and the removal of cancelled flights from the booking systems of airlines.
Mavcom executive chairman Saripuddin Kasim said they will effectively eliminate any inconsistencies in the types of refunds accorded to consumers.
“We are proposing changes to the consumer protection code to better address gaps that have come to light, particularly after the Covid-19 pandemic.
“As a regulator, it is our role to obtain feedback from consumers and the industry to ensure passengers are protected when their flights are disrupted,” he said in a statement.
Saripuddin said Mavcom’s engagement with stakeholders on the proposed amendments is under way.
Mavcom’s consultation paper is open for public review and feedback until Nov 7. Feedback may be submitted through the commission’s website or by post to its headquarters.
The Malaysian Aviation Consumer Protection Code, which came into effect in 2016, stipulates that airlines must refund travellers if flights are cancelled or significantly changed.
