Bersih slams cops for arresting PKR man for ‘obstructing traffic’

The electoral reform group says police should instead be investigating claims of voters having addresses changed without their consent.

Rozan Azen Mat Rasip claims to have suffered some bruises to his arms after he was arrested yesterday.
PETALING JAYA:
Electoral reform group Bersih has slammed the arrest of a PKR divisional leader yesterday for allegedly obstructing traffic while he was investigating claims of possible electoral fraud.

In a statement, the group questioned the police for arresting Rozan Azen Mat Rasip, PKR’s vice-chief for the Batu constituency, and investigating him under Section 283 of the Penal Code (for danger or obstruction in a public way).

“What was the reason behind Rozan’s arrest when he was only helping voters to check on their status and voting address?” it said in a statement.

Bersih said police should instead be investigating the claims in the change in voting addresses without voters’ consent.

Rozan was arrested at 6pm yesterday and spent a night in lock-up at the Jinjang police station. He was released at around noon today.

He also claimed to have suffered some bruises to his arms after he was arrested.

The electoral group said it had received several complaints from the public claiming that their voting constituencies for both parliamentary and state seats had been changed.

According to Bersih, two voters in Sabah claimed that they voted in the Tawau parliamentary seat and Sri Tanjung state seat in the last general election (GE14).

“However, they said they were now listed as voters in the Kalabakan parliamentary seat and Merotai state seat instead,” it said.

Bersih said that based on its investigation, the two voters had never applied to change their polling address.

It called on the Election Commission to explain the change in the constituencies for these voters without their consent.

“The lack of transparency in the procedures and the changes done without the voters’ knowledge will erode the people’s trust in the commission. This is a real threat to the election process itself.”
