PETALING JAYA:
More than 8,000 motorcyclists were fined for running red lights during a 15-day nationwide operation conducted by the police.

In a statement, Bukit Aman secretary Noorsiah Saaduddin said a total of 16,163 summonses were issued for the offence under the Road Traffic Rules 1959 during an operation which began on Sept 15.

Motorcyclists (8,211) accounted for just over half of those fined followed by cars (6,083), other vehicles (1,055), lorries (528), vans (264) and buses (22).

Noorsiah said that 24,276 summons were also issued for other traffic offences throughout the operation.

Police also made six arrests under the Road Transport Act 1987, eight under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and 13 related to arrest warrants.

Noorsiah said police took the failure to stop at red lights seriously as it could lead to accidents.

She advised the public to always be careful and obey traffic rules to ensure the safety of other road users.
