PETALING JAYA:
A 38-year-old businessman was kidnapped while dining alone at a restaurant in Ampang yesterday, prompting members of the public to try and rescue him.

Ampang Jaya police chief Farouk Eshak said the incident happened at about 5pm after a group of men, believed to be Malaysians, appeared and dragged the man into a white Toyota Vellfire.

The victim shouted for help and struggled to escape, but to no avail.

Several motorists were seen in a video that went viral giving chase, with a number of motorcyclists also trying to stop the car, but failing.

However, Farouk said the victim showed up at the Ampang Jaya district police headquarters at 10.45pm to lodge a police report, claiming he had been freed by the kidnappers in Klang about five hours after the incident.

He had injuries on his face and feet, and later sought treatment at the Ampang hospital, he said.

“The incident is believed to be related to debt owed to his employer,” Farouk said in a statement, thanking the public for their efforts.

Police are still tracking down the suspects.

The case is being investigated under Section 365 of the Penal Code for kidnapping or abduction with intent to wrongfully confine someone, which provides for a maximum seven years in jail and a fine upon conviction.
