PETALING JAYA:
A man was fined RM43,000 by the Shah Alam magistrates’ court on Tuesday for using fake halal logos on imported frozen beef.

According to Khairi Jamaludin, the domestic trade and consumer affairs ministry’s Selangor division chief enforcement officer, the sentence was handed down by magistrate Rashiyah Ghazali after the man pleaded guilty to the offence.

Khairi said the man was apprehended following a joint operation by the ministry’s Selangor division, the Selangor Islamic religious department (Jais) and the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services (Maqis) on a premise in Pulau Indah in January last year.

The authorities found boxes of imported frozen beef with suspicious halal logos on them, according to Jais.

The court fined him RM43,000, or 15 months in default, under the Trade Description (Certification and Marking of Halal) Order 2011.

A total of 1,672 items worth more than RM500,000 confiscated in the raid were destroyed, Khairi added in a statement.
