He said the former prime minister, who was sentenced to 12 years’ jail for corruption linked to SRC International, was given the same treatment as any other prisoner.
“Bullshit, total nonsense,” he told reporters when Najib’s 1MDB trial had gone for a break.
He was responding to a police report filed by a businessman on Friday calling for an investigation into claims on social media that Najib had received preferential treatment in prison.
The businessman, Sheikh Fahmi Sheikh Jaafar, said if the allegations were true, police must take action against those involved.
However, if the allegations were false, he said, then action must also be taken against those who had spread such rumours.
Early last week, a message had made the rounds on social media alleging that Najib’s cell in the Kajang prison complex had been renovated.
The message, which referred to Najib as “Merpati”, also claimed that there were plans to have him transferred to the Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital (HRC) to allow easier access to VVIP facilities.
Last week, the prisons department confirmed that Najib was transferred to the HRC on Sept 19 after being referred by Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL).
On Friday, the HRC announced that the Pekan MP had been given a clean bill of health and could return to prison.
Both the prisons department and health minister Khairy Jamaluddin had on separate occasions denied claims that the former prime minister was getting special treatment, whether in prison or while in hospital.
Shafee pointed out that Najib did not even get a room here in the KL High Court to sit down and eat.
“Even his family members cannot bring food during court or in prison,” he said.
He said Najib was warded in a normal room when being treated in hospital.
He also said it was recommended for Najib to be sent to HRC as HKL’s physiotherapy facilities were inadequate.
“He has a certain medical condition that requires him to do physiotherapy. He has a knee problem and had gone for a major operation when he was prime minister,” he said.
