KUALA LUMPUR:
An outbreak of African swine fever has been detected at two commercial pig farms in the Kerian district, Perak, over the weekend.

The infected farms have been sealed and a ban placed on the transport of pigs and movement of vehicles, the veterinary department said.

Conditions for moving pigs and pork products from Perak to the rest of Peninsular Malaysia have also been tightened.

Culling of the remaining pig population at the infected farms is being carried out.

The department said the outbreak is under control. It advised the public not to panic as the disease is not contagious to humans.
