Adly Kamarudin said Richard Chan’s wife will be accompanied by his sister and will head straight for Ipoh to lodge a police report to enable them to claim his body and personal belongings.
“Helipost Sdn Bhd will foot all the expenditure incurred in bringing the family over. His wife also has to settle the status of the condominium he owns in Kuala Lumpur,” he told FMT.
He said the family will claim Chan’s body from Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun in Ipoh on Monday, but he is not sure if the remains will be taken back to Hong Kong or if the funeral will be held here.
Adly said the family members will be in Malaysia for three weeks to sort out all paperwork, including insurance claims, before returning home. It is understood that a lawyer has been engaged to assist them.
He said Chan was a competent pilot and had been flying for nearly 20 years without any incident, adding that he was close to him.
“My company will do whatever we can to assist his family during this difficult moment,” he said.
Chan was flying solo when the crash took place on Sept 11. Kuala Lumpur Air Traffic Control said there was no distress call after the helicopter went missing from the radar at 12.16pm.
The search and rescue team found the crashed helicopter at about 9am the following day, with Chan strapped in his seat.
