PETALING JAYA:
About 600 victims from 190 families in Sri Gading, Johor, have been evacuated after flash floods hit the Batu Pahat township this morning.

Batu Pahat district police chief Ismail Dollah said the victims have been evacuated to a temporary evacuation centre at SMK Seri Gading.

He said the floods followed heavy rain since 1.30am and the high tide phenomenon around 3am, causing some low-lying areas to be flooded.

The floods involved four areas in Sri Gading – Taman Sri Panchor, Kampung Sengkuang, Kampung Batu Sri Gading and Pekan Sri Gading.

A temporary evacuation centre was initially opened at SK Seri Gading but that also became flooded. The victims were then transferred to SMK Seri Gading.

Twenty-five officers and members from various agencies such as police, fire and rescue department, civil defence force, social welfare department and district health office took part in the rescue operation.

“As of now, the main roads that connect the Batu Pahat district with other districts can still be used by all vehicles,” he said.
