In a statement, law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the Cabinet had agreed in principle to a bill being drafted.
“The drafting of this bill will take into account the views of the stakeholders, including political parties, that were gathered through several engagement sessions,” he said.
Wan Junaidi said the basic scope for the bill was presented at the Cabinet meeting on Sept 7. A decision was taken that an independent body would be established to monitor political donations and the financing of political parties.
The proposed legal framework for the bill would be submitted to a technical committee of the Memorandum of Understanding on Transformation and Political Stability for it to be refined before it is tabled in Parliament.
Last month, Wan Junaidi said the draft bill would be prepared as soon as possible to enable all concerned to be consulted.
