Do forensic audits of 3 MIC-related bodies, urges Anwar

The opposition leader says government allocations meant for the Indian community have been mismanaged.

Anwar Ibrahim said a public inquiry should be held if necessary, besides forensic audits of three MIC-related organisations.
SHAH ALAM:
Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has called for forensic audits of three MIC-related organisations where he said government funds meant for the Indian community had been misappropriated.

Anwar said the three organisations were:

  • Maika Holdings, the investment company founded by MIC in the 80s but which was embroiled in a financial scandal in the early 90s;
  • the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra), which was investigated by MACC last year over allegations that its funds were abused from 2019 to 2021.
  • MIC’s education arm, the Maju Institute of Educational Development, which he said was embroiled in financial improprieties.

“Forensic audits on these entities are a must, and if necessary, there must be a public inquiry,” Anwar told reporters after attending a PKR gathering held to address the problems faced by the Indian community.

“All this while, the Indian community has been lamenting about being neglected despite the government pouring funds into these entities aimed at helping them,” said Anwar, who is PKR president.

“They have been lamenting about being in poverty and having limited access to education among others. The allocations given to them were not properly managed.”

In a speech at the gathering Anwar called on the Indian community to demand that the three organisations be audited. He said such an audit had revealed corrupt practices in the RM6 billion littoral combat ship project to build six frigates for the navy.

PKR central committee member R Sivarasa said there must be prosecution of anyone found engaged in criminal wrongdoing.

However, he was not optimistic about the government ordering the forensic audits to be carried out.

He said the audits were something that Anwar would do if the opposition parties form a new government after the next general election.
