PETALING JAYA:
Officials of the Federal Territories Islamic religious council were taken aback when looking for a family that had appealed for “zakat” aid – and found them putting up at a posh residence.

Zakat aid is normally distributed to the poor and needy.

The family was renting a unit at a condominium building which had a guard house fitted with several CCTV cameras, the council said in an online posting.

“Normally, those who are struggling financially would not be able to stay in such luxurious homes,” the council said.

It advised those who were struggling to make ends meet to be prepared to change their lifestyle.

“We need to know how to accommodate our wants and needs based on what we can afford,” the council said.
