Export ban to end in October, but only some farms can rear chickens

Annuar Musa says the farms must obtain the agriculture and food industries ministry’s approval as to the number of chickens that will be exported.

Chicken exports were banned from June 1 in the midst of a chicken supply shortage that caused its price to increase.
PETALING JAYA:
The ban on chicken exports will be lifted in October, anti-inflation task force chairman Annuar Musa has announced.

However, Annuar said only certain farms would be allowed to rear chickens meant for export, adding that they could begin rearing them now.

Annuar, who is also communications and multimedia minister, said those rearing chickens for export must also obtain the agriculture and food industries ministry’s approval as to the number of birds they would be producing.

Chicken exports were banned from June 1 in the midst of a shortage of chicken supply that caused prices to increase.

An oversupply of chicken recently had caused poultry farmers to call for the ban to be lifted.

Annuar said the decision to lift the ban should not affect domestic supply, as improved local supply has helped to lower prices.

“It is true that the price of chicken has dropped below RM9.40 per kg (the chicken ceiling price). But now that it has decreased, we cannot cut the supply.”

Annuar said the anti-inflation task force would monitor the farms that were allowed to rear chickens for exports.
