This comes after Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob expressed concern over this possibility post-GE15, saying if no one party could secure a simple majority of 112 seats, there will be instability.
In a Facebook post, Zahid pointed out that political scientist Wong Chin Huat had said yesterday that there was nothing to fear or be concerned about over a hung parliament after GE15.
“This situation isn’t as bad as depicted by certain parties. In fact, it doesn’t destroy a country, nor does it affect its economy. Instead, we need to have a greater comparative political understanding.
“The New Zealand governments from 1996 to 2020 were formed from (hung parliaments) but the nation still progressed and remained stable.
“Therefore, don’t use the excuse of fearing a hung parliament to prevent GE15 from being held,” said the Bagan Datuk MP.
Umno, the party where Ismail is a vice-president, has repeatedly been calling for GE15 to be held this year.
Yesterday, Ismail reportedly said if no party achieved the simple majority of 112 seats in GE15, then there was a need for a new alliance to be formed among certain political parties.
The prime minister stressed the importance of having a dominant party to lead the government after the polls.
Asked if the new alliance he was referring to was similar to the one that made up the current administration, Ismail said that would depend on the number of seats won by the different parties.
