Nazri, 39, used to be healthy but his health started deteriorating in May. Then on June 22, he complained about feeling sick, and suddenly vomited and fell unconscious.
He was rushed to Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM) in Kubang Kerian, where he underwent surgery for a ruptured blood vessel. This was followed by another surgery a week later.
After his condition was stabilised, his wife Nur Fazlizawati Zohari got the doctor’s consent to transfer him to Hospital Sultan Ismail Petra in Kuala Krai, which is much nearer to home.
Nazri remains in a semi-conscious state and bedridden, as Fazlizawati, who is also 39, visits him every day.
From her home in Kampung Petanding, Telekong, which is about 25km from the hospital, she rides her motorcycle to tend to his needs.

“I change his diapers, give him a wash and feed him milk through a feeding tube. I am only able to do this because our family members help to look after our five children, aged three to 17, when I am not at home.”
She said the once-breadwinner of the family was also having memory lapses and she was unsure if her husband still remembered her.
Nevertheless, she remains confident and hopeful he would soon be well again.
Her children, especially the younger ones, are already missing their father since it has been almost two months since they last saw Nazri.
“They haven’t met him since he was first rushed to hospital. I just tell them that their father is sick and in hospital and they understand. But the youngest has started to miss him a lot more and cries when he calls out for his dad.”
Fazlizawati said they are seeking aid from the welfare department, especially for medical equipment as well as a hospital bed, tubes, diapers and milk for her husband.
“But it’s taking some time. So until then, he’ll have to stay in the hospital even though the doctors said he can be sent home.”
