KUALA LUMPUR:
A 17-year-old teenager who was allegedly caught ferrying 25 undocumented migrants in a multipurpose vehicle earlier this month was charged in the sessions court here today.

The teenager is alleged to have smuggled the Myanmar migrants, aged between 15 and 39, into Kuala Lumpur with the help of another individual still at large on Aug 2. Six from the group were said to be women.

He was charged under Section 26A of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.

If convicted, he faces imprisonment of up to 20 years, or a fine, or both.

After proceedings, deputy public prosecutor Muhamad Zuraidi Zulkifli told the media no plea had been recorded from the teenager as the case was slated for transfer to a High Court.

The court set Oct 17 for mention.

It was earlier reported that a number of Myanmar migrants had been taken from Rantau Panjang in Kelantan to Kuala Lumpur to look for jobs.

According to police, investigations revealed that a tekong (harbourer) had charged each migrant RM6,000 to illegally enter the country.
