PETALING JAYA:
Several participants of three separate gatherings held in the capital last month to protest the rising prices of goods will be charged at the Kuala Lumpur magistrate’s court under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, tomorrow.

However, Dang Wangi police did not specify how many people would be charged.

“The cases are linked to the gatherings held to protest the rising cost of living,” Dang Wangi police chief Noor Dellhan Yahaya said in a statement.

On July 1, Amanah organised a protest over the rising prices of goods with about 100 people taking part. The next day, two of the protest’s organisers were questioned by police, with eight more summoned to give their statements.

On July 9, a protest against the rising prices of goods was held outside the Sogo shopping complex in Kuala Lumpur.

On July 23, about 500 people attended a protest organised by a group calling itself “Turun Malaysia”. Police stopped them from marching to Dataran Merdeka.

“All suspects will be charged in court at 9am tomorrow, under Section 9 (5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012,” Noor Dellhan said.

Section 9 (5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act, requires organisers to give a 10-day notice to the authorities prior to a gathering.
