
FMT managing director Azeem Abu Bakar said the portal was encouraged by the award, and highlighted the role the media could play in helping the country revive the tourism sector in a post Covid-19 economy.
“There are a lot of hidden gems in the state. By featuring such locations in the media, we not only hope that it could lead to revenue but get the people to appreciate what the state has to offer.”
Sinar Harian picked up the award for the best Malay portal.
State executive councillor Hee Loy Sian, who is responsible for tourism, environment, green technology and Orang Asli affairs, paid tribute to the media, saying the press played a vital role.
“Our efforts to promote tourism could not reach the people and tourists without the help and support of the press, hence we are always emphasising cooperation with content creators of various forms of media.”
Tourism Selangor CEO Azrul Shah Mohamad, said plans to improve local tourism standards were under way including the installation of better signboards, enduring infrastructure, and regular maintenance.
He said they were balancing between making tourism spots well-preserved as per international standards, while keeping them affordable for locals.
“We have joint ventures in our plans, where we are looking to promote tourism while ensuring that our environment can be used as a tourism product without jeopardising its sustainability.”
