Only proper for states to adopt anti-hopping law, says MCA chief

Wee Ka Siong says the situation is similar to the adoption of the Undi18 law to lower the voting age from 21 to 18.

ISKANDAR PUTERI:
Anti-hopping bills should be tabled at state assemblies in line with the one passed in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday, MCA president Wee Ka Siong said today.

He said that as MPs from both sides had supported the amendment to the Federal Constitution, it was only right for similar amendments to be made to state constitutions.

“Any matters passed in Parliament, in principle, should be applied by the states as well. This is the same as how the amendments were done for Undi18. Now, it is up to the states to do so,” the Ayer Hitam MP said.

Undi18 was an initiative to lower the voting age to 18 and to provide for automatic voter registration.

Wee spoke to reporters after the announcement of 125 MCA-appointed local authority councillors throughout Johor here today.

The anti-hopping bill, which proposes to prohibit MPs from changing parties, received the support of more than two-thirds of MPs, with 209 out of 220 MPs voting in favour.
