JOHOR BAHRU:
Police have questioned 12 people as part of investigations into an inmate’s death in the Kluang prison last month.

Johor police chief Kamarul Zaman Mamat said the 12 comprised three family members, five cellmates and four prison staff.

However, he said, authorities had yet to receive the autopsy report from the Sultanah Aminah Hospital.

“We don’t know how long it (the autopsy report) will take, but the investigating officer has been in contact with the hospital.

“We also do not want this case to remain unresolved for too long,” he said at a press conference here today.

He said the man’s remains had been released to his family on June 29.

Kamarul Zaman said the inmate was rushed to a hospital in Kluang after being found unconscious on June 28, the day he was scheduled to be released.

Yesterday, Kamarul Zaman was reported as saying that Johor police would conduct a thorough investigation into the death of prisoner Kim Shih Keat, 36, who was a coffee shop owner.

In a press conference on Sunday, Kim’s family members requested that the autopsy and chemistry report over the man’s death be released by Friday at the latest.

Kim was sentenced to seven days’ jail and a fine of RM15,000 after the sessions court found him guilty of driving while intoxicated on June 22.

Kim’s family members claimed that they were on their way to the prison to pick him up when they received a call from the manager of a funeral home informing them that Kim had died.
