At the Dewan Rakyat today, Bung also urged Shahidan to reveal how much money had been allocated for flood prevention measures in Kuala Lumpur.
“I heard similar responses (on flood prevention measures) 15 years ago but Kuala Lumpur continues to experience flooding.
“There must be assurances that KL will not suffer any more flash floods,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat.
He said this in response to Shahidan’s answer to a question from Fong Kui Lun (PH-Bukit Bintang).
The DAP man had asked what the ministry was doing to mitigate flash floods in the city.
Shahidan responded by giving a list of short-term and long-term measures, adding that KL has not been hit by any flash floods since April 25.
“(We took) immediate action (after April 25) in flood-prone areas including upgrading drains, dredging work to remove silt, maintenance work on reservoirs, rivers and storm drains,” he said, adding that sandbags have also been placed at low-lying areas.
He added that flap valves were also installed in the drainage system in flood-prone areas to channel water into nearby rivers.
According to Shahidan, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) was currently undertaking eight flood mitigation projects in Jalan Sultan Salahuddin, Bulatan Datuk Onn, Jalan Raja Mahadi, Sungai Toba, Segambut and Jalan Kuching.
The Arau MP added that a large-scale groundwater storage tunnel would be constructed in KL to further mitigate flash floods.
“I’m confident that these measures will make Kuala Lumpur a flood-free city.”
