His lawyer, Ramkarpal Singh, said Rizal, who was detained yesterday, is being investigated for three videos that allegedly touched on racial and religious sensitivities.
“The police initially applied for a four-day remand order but we objected to that. The magistrate agreed and allowed a one-day remand order for Rizal,” he told reporters outside the Dang Wangi district police headquarters today.
He said the Crackhouse Comedy Club co-founder will be released after 6pm.
He said Rizal was being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Rizal has been at the centre of a controversy after videos circulated on social media irked certain quarters who were not happy with his standup material.
Yesterday, a woman who performed at the club in June, Siti Nuramira Abdullah, was charged with insulting Islam.
Her boyfriend, freelance writer Alexander Navin Vijayachandran, was charged in a separate court with uploading insulting content on social media.
They pleaded not guilty to the charges.
