Haj ‘scam’ victims report losses of over RM3.9mil

Bukit Aman says 72 reports have been lodged against three travel agencies.

Police have received a total of 72 reports nationwide related to fraudulent haj pilgrimage packages involving three travel agencies.

Based on the reports, the losses amounted to RM3.95 million.

Bukit Aman police secretary Noorsiah Saaduddin said Kuala Lumpur recorded 24 reports involving losses amounting to more than RM1.2 million, followed by Selangor with 14 reports involving losses totalling RM404,000.

“Pahang had 13 reports with losses of over RM1.6 million, while Kelantan, Johor and Perak received five reports each with total losses amounting to RM556,000,” she said in a statement.

Noorsiah said Kedah had three reports lodged with losses amounting to RM48,000, while Terengganu, Penang and Negeri Sembilan recorded one report each with a total loss of RM86,000.

On July 7, about 380 prospective haj pilgrims found themselves stranded at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), believed to be victims of a scam by a travel agency.

They were believed to have used private haj visas not involving the Lembaga Tabung Haji quota.
