We didn’t fund the Tanah Merah PTA event, says Radzi

PETALING JAYA:
Education minister Radzi Jidin says his ministry did not fund a parent-teacher associations’ meeting at Tanah Merah which featured a car as a lucky draw prize.

“A review found that none of the ministry’s funds was used to finance the parent-teacher’s annual general assembly in Tanah Merah,” Radzi said on Facebook.

“The programme was funded by the Tanah Merah MP.”

He was responding to reports that Tanah Merah MP Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz gave away a Perodua Axia at the July 2 event in his constituency, which was organised by the district education office and officiated by the Bersatu MP.

Other prizes reportedly up for grabs at the event included five motorcycles, 10 cows, 10 40in television sets, 20 handphones and 200 hampers. Some 100 whole-roasted lambs were allegedly also provided.

Ikmal Hisham, who is also the deputy defence minister, yesterday denied allegations that G-Shock watches and umbrellas were given to the public to garner support at a separate event organised by Perikatan Nasional (PN) in Kelantan last weekend.

He maintained that the public attended the event voluntarily, and that giving the 30,000 attendees such door gifts would have cost tens of millions of ringgit.

Earlier today, former prime minister Najib Razak questioned if the education ministry had footed the bill for the PTA meeting or whether PN covered the costs, noting that Ikmal Hisham and others were wearing the coalition’s shirts at the event.
