PETALING JAYA:
More than RM38.2 million of subsidised goods that had been “misappropriated” have been seized by the authorities this year, Inspector-General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said today.

He said the seizures included about RM854,252 in cooking oil.

The seizures were made in a joint sting with enforcement officers from the domestic trade and consumer affairs ministry, Acryl Sani said in a statement tonight.

“Such joint efforts are a positive step towards curbing leakages of subsidised goods.”

On July 1, the government ceased subsidising bottled cooking oil (2kg, 3kg and 5kg), but the subsidy for cooking oil sold in 1kg polybags remains.

Earlier this evening, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the National Action Council on Cost of Living agreed to audit the production of cooking oil in 1kg polybags.

He said this was to prevent leakages and to ensure that the RM4 billion being spent to subsidise cooking oil sold in polybags reached consumers.
