PETALING JAYA:
Police said today no personnel from the special actions unit (UTK) were involved in an assault of three journalists at a political event in Kelantan as claimed by a media advocacy group yesterday.

“An investigation is under way to identify the individuals involved in the incident,” said police secretary Noorsiah Saaduddin in a statement. “Strict action will be taken if the investigation uncovers any violations of the code of ethics and conduct by any security officer on assignment at the event.”

Media advocacy group Gerakan Media Merdeka (Geramm) said yesterday that three journalists were assaulted by a security officer at the launch of Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) Kelantan branch in Tanah Merah.

Two journalists said they were assaulted by a bodyguard or UTK personnel, who tried to prevent them from taking photos. The event was attended by PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin and other senior leaders of Bersatu.

Geramm said one journalist reported being slapped in the stomach and another gripped at the neck when they were near the main stage.
