Ismail Sabri Yaakob said this will enable workers to have a say in all decisions made by the board of directors of GLCs and GLICs.
“The government hopes these representatives will also play a role in the management of the companies,” he said while officiating MTUC’s triennial delegates conference (TDC) at Balai Ungku Aziz, Universiti Malaya, here.
Currently, MTUC representatives are also board members of several bodies, including the National Labour Advisory Council, Employees Provident Fund (EPF), and the Social Security Organisation (Socso).
The prime minister also announced a RM4 million yearly grant to the congress to implement training and awareness programmes in line with the development of the fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0).
He urged MTUC to formulate a holistic, effective and comprehensive training plan for its members, which can be extended to others.
Ismail said the MTUC should also review its efforts and ensure that companies provide their workers with the appropriate new skills, instead of just fighting for issues related to remuneration.
He also reminded MTUC to be mindful of the needs of its members, especially union members who belong to the B40 and the hardcore poor groups.
Earlier, it was reported that the TDC would be attended by 509 delegates from 115 unions, with 12 unions unable to attend after missing the deadline to submit delegates’ forms.
