Tackle rising prices or face street protests, say students

The student unions of two universities say the government must lower the price of goods or face street protests.

The student unions of the International Islamic University Malaysia and Universiti Malaya say rising prices are affecting university students.
PETALING JAYA:
The government should lower the prices of goods or face the prospect of street protests, two student unions said today.

The student unions of the International Islamic University Malaysia and Universiti Malaya said the rising cost of living would burden the people, as well as students.

They criticised the government’s decision to discontinue the subsidy for bottled cooking oil which they said was made without considering the rakyat’s situation.

They also criticised the government’s recently announced additional RM100 Bantuan Keluarga Malaysia cash aid. “BKM recipients cannot survive on RM100 for very long if the prices of essential goods keep rising,” they said.

They accused the government of not having a plan to aid students who are also affected by rising prices.

They urged the government to come up with a new plan to help all walks of life.
