KUALA LUMPUR: A draft amendment on the proposed abolition of mandatory death sentences will be prepared by the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC), says deputy law minister Mas Ermieyati Samsudin.
She said the AGC and the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department had been asked to study and scrutinise the recommendations submitted on the matter.
This was done following a meeting between law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and Attorney-General Idrus Harun on Monday, she added.
The views of academic experts and MPs would also be sought before the amendment bill is tabled in Parliament in October,” she said in a statement.
The government has said it had agreed in principle with a proposal to abolish mandatory death sentences which was tabled at a Cabinet meeting on June 8.
