AGC files appeal against verdict in Cradle Fund CEO murder case

Deputy public prosecutor says the notice of appeal was filed via e-filing yesterday.

Samirah Muzaffar and two teenagers were acquitted on Tuesday of a charge of murdering former Cradle Fund CEO Nazrin Hassan in 2018.
PETALING JAYA:
The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) has filed a notice of appeal to overturn the High Court’s decision to acquit Samirah Muzaffar and two teenagers over the murder of her husband, former Cradle Fund CEO Nazrin Hassan, four years ago.

“We are appealing the High Court’s decision,” Bernama quoted Attorney-General Idrus Harun as saying.

Deputy public prosecutor Tengku Intan Suraya Tengku Ismail told Bernama the notice of appeal was filed via e-filing yesterday.

The prosecution had been given 14 days to file a notice of appeal to overturn the High Court’s decision.

In acquitting the three accused on Tuesday, judge Ab Karim Ab Rahman ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove a prima facie case.

Samirah, 47, the two teenagers, now aged 19 and 16, and Indonesian maid Eka Wahyu Lestari, who is at large, had been charged with murdering Nazrin at their home in Mutiara Damansara on June 14, 2018.

After the proceedings ended, lead counsel Shafee Abdullah told reporters the defence was prepared should the AGC challenge the acquittal of Samirah and the teenagers.

Nazrin’s brother, Dr Abdul Aziz Che Hassan, had told reporters that he and his family hoped the AGC would file an appeal against the ruling.
