Draft law on political finance ‘ready since 2017’

Umno secretary-general calls for a parliamentary committee to get the draft to be tabled immediately.

Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said federal minister Paul Low had completed a draft bill in 2017.
ALOR GAJAH:
A parliamentary-level committee needs to be formed to enable a new law on political finance to be tabled immediately at the Dewan Rakyat, an Umno leader said today.

Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said a draft of the act had been ready since 2017 under then federal minister Paul Low whose duties include completing the draft of a political finance bill.

“However, at the committee level, the opposition did not agree because they were worried that companies that provided political funds to the parties would be blacklisted by the government,” he told reporters after an Umno branch meeting.

Ahmad said western countries had long had a law on political finance so that politicians or any person would not become victims for receiving or giving funds.
