Pejuang urges MACC to probe Kampung Baru land acquisition

This comes after the developer’s representative told residents that they had spent close to RM42 million although the land had not been developed yet.

Pejuang president Mukhriz Mahathir called for a probe to be carried out to determine if the land acquisition process in Kampung Baru was above board.
PUTRAJAYA:
Pejuang has urged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate allegations of bribery and abuse of power in the land acquisition process of Kampung Sungai Baru, in Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur.

Party president Mukhriz Mahathir said this after the developer’s representative told residents that they had spent close to RM42 million although the land had not been developed yet.

“We ask for an investigation paper to be opened by MACC to probe the use of these funds and if there was any bribery or abuse of power involving officials from the federal territories ministry, Kampong Bharu Development Corporation (PKB), and the department of director-general of lands and mines (JKPTG).”

The statement was read by Pejuang’s federal territories chief Khairuddin Abu Hassan in a press conference outside the MACC headquarters.

Former federal territories minister Khalid Samad previously said he would submit a complaint to MACC as there were elements of bribery in the case.

The Amanah communications director had reportedly said that they would form a special committee of lawyers to study the issue.

Residents of Kampung Sungai Baru have also urged the prime minister to intervene and prevent the developer from claiming the land.

Meanwhile, Mukhriz also questioned the legitimacy of Affendi Zahari’s position as chairman of PKB after he was believed to have been declared a bankrupt at the Shah Alam High Court on Oct 11 last year.

“This matter also raises another issue in terms of the integrity of PKB which is under the supervision of the federal territories minister.”

“If the allegations regarding the bankruptcy status are true, then under the law Affendi can no longer act as the chairman of PKB,” Mukhriz said.

He said Section 10 (c) of the Kampong Bharu Development Corporation Act 2011 (Act 733) clearly states that “the position of a member of the corporation must become vacant if he is declared bankrupt”.

He urged the federal territories minister Shahidan Kassim to investigate the matter and appoint a new PKB chairman who is competent, has integrity and is free from political influence.
