PETALING JAYA:
A former diplomat and his son pleaded not guilty in the Raub sessions court to charges of growing cannabis plants.

Zainal Abidin Alias, 78, and Mohamed Rizal, 53, made the plea after the charges were read to them before judge Ahmad Faizadh Yahaya.

According to a Bernama report, the charges were framed under Section 6B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 (Act 234) and Section 34 of the Penal Code, which carries life imprisonment and no less than six whips of the cane if found guilty.

The prosecution was led by Khalid Ab Karim, who was assisted by deputy public prosecutors Hayda Faridzal Abu Hassan and Anisah Pisol.

Zainal and Rizal were represented by Rahmat Hazlan.

During the proceedings, the prosecution said that no bail was offered while Rahmat said his team had submitted a representation to the Attorney-General’s Chambers on June 2 over the charges.

The court fixed July 22 for mention of the case.

The father and son had previously been charged at the Bentong magistrate’s court with trafficking more than 1kg of cannabis under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act as well as under Section 9(1)(b) of the same Act with possessing 60ml of cannabis oil.

The alleged offence took place at Kampung Sum Sum in Janda Baik, Pahang, on May 21, where authorities said they found 102 cannabis plants with a street value of about RM61,200 planted in rows around the house, 1.02kg of dried cannabis leaves, and a bottle of liquid believed to be cannabis oil.
