PETALING JAYA:
A former diplomat and his son have been charged at the Bentong magistrates’ court with trafficking more than 1kg of cannabis.

Zainal Abidin Alias, 78, and son Riza Zainal Abidin, 53, were charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act. They were also charged under Section 9(1)(b) of the same Act with possessing 60ml cannabis oil.

The alleged offence took place at Kampung Sum Sum in Janda Baik, Pahang on May 21.

Riza faces another charge for “wrongly” using cannabis oil.

No pleas were recorded from them before magistrate Shahrul Ekhsan Hashim, who fixed June 13 for mention.

They were both represented by Rahmat Mohamed Hazlan and Tania Scivetti while deputy public prosecutor Mohammad Khalid appeared for the prosecution.

Zainal was released from his remand by the magistrates’ court last week while Riza’s remand was scheduled to end this weekend.

Rahmat told reporters that Zainal voluntarily appeared in court today to face charges.

He said both Zainal and Riza were taken to Bentong prison after they were charged.

They were arrested on May 21 after what the police said was the largest cannabis plant seizure so far, as past cases only involved plants grown in pots.

The authorities said they found 102 cannabis plants with a street value of about RM61,200 planted in rows around the house, 1.02kg of dried cannabis leaves, and a bottle of liquid believed to be cannabis oil.

According to the police, one of the suspects had admitted to having grown the plants by watching a YouTube video but obtained the seeds from Kuala Lumpur.
