
However, Kuala Lumpur CID chief Habibi Majinji said the case will be reclassified under Section 160 of the Penal Code, for the offence of affray or causing a commotion, after he personally took a look at the facts of the case today.
“The police will check if the two parties were fighting in public. We will see which side is at fault and take action based on the investigation as both parties have come forward to lodge police reports,” he told FMT.
Habibi added that those involved will be called in to have their statements recorded in a few days’ time.
On Saturday, two reporters of The Vibes news portal said they had been harassed by an angry security guard who insisted they leave the premises while they were reporting on long queues at the Urban Transformation Centre.
The guard also snatched a phone from one of the reporters but the colleague “snatched it back”.
A media activist group has called for a law to protect the press, saying the UTC case highlighted the need for legal protection for the safety of the media when performing their duties.
Gerakan Media Merdeka (Geramm) said the formulation of any law should be based on journalism ethics and principles.
