According to Fahmi, almost all the conditions for the debate had been decided by Najib’s team, including the format, questions, location and the omission of court issues.
“Najib’s team did not want us to discuss (1MDB), it was decided early on that court issues could not be discussed.
“Someone asked why Anwar ‘did not deliver the killer blow’. It’s because that night, almost all the boundaries were set by Najib’s team,” he told reporters when attending the PKR federal territory elections at Dewan Gasing Indah, Kuala Lumpur, today.
Fahmi said questions posed to the two political figures should have come from the public instead of representatives from their respective parties.
“But regardless, for me, the debate is a good start. The last time we had a debate like this was in 2008. So it’s been 14 years, quite a long time. I hope after this there will be more debates, for example, between the prime minister and the leader of the opposition.
“Such an event would be highly anticipated. I just hope the format and constraints are not the same (as the previous debate),” he said.
In the debate session, the opposition leader suggested that a forensic audit be conducted on Sapura Energy Bhd in efforts to save the company from the various problems it faced.
Asked if Anwar’s proposals would end with the debate, Fahmi said it was up to the government to consider whether to implement it or not.
Fahmi said, however, as far as the opposition was concerned, the recommendations would be brought up at the next parliamentary meeting.
“Of course, there will be those who bring up the Forex issue raised by Najib,” he said.
Meanwhile, in the PKR elections for the Lembah Pantai area which took place this morning, Fahmi’s team won without contest.
