HANOI:
The national men’s and women’s hammer throwers exacted sweet revenge by defeating their Thai challengers who had dethroned them in the 2019 SEA Games in Manila, by winning their respective events at the Hanoi Games today.

Both Jackie Wong and Grace Wong dethroned the Thais to wrest back their respective titles and deliver Malaysia’s 12th and 13th gold medals at the My Dinh National Stadium here.

Grace got the hammer flying for Malaysia by winning the women’s title with a hurl of 57.13m in the fourth attempt.

Though it was way off her national record of 62.48m set in April last year, she still managed to dethrone Mingkamon Koomphon (50.28m) who won the silver, while another Thai representative, Panwat Gimsrang (49.64m), took home the bronze.

“I was not satisfied with the distance as I was targeting the 60-61-metre range. There was a technical problem, the hammer wire was too short but I tried my best.

“After losing the gold in the 30th Games in the Philippines, I was very sad but now after regaining the gold, I feel like everything is ok.

“I would like to thank everyone for sending us to train in South Korea for 42 days. It was very helpful,” she told reporters.

Grace won her maiden SEA Games gold with a record of 59.24m at the 2017 KL Games, dethroning Mingkamon.

However, in the next Games in Manila, Mingkamon claimed back the title, leaving Grace with silver.

Meanwhile, Jackie also recaptured his title by edging his arch-rival Kittipong Boonmawan for the second time in the men’s event, with a hurl of 66.49m in the last attempt.

Kittipong, the 2015 and 2019 champion, managed 64.54m, while another Malaysian, Sadat Maryuki Ajisan, secured the bronze with a 58.86m hurl.

Jackie clinched the gold in the 2017 SEA Games with a Games record of 65.90m but had to settle for silver in the 2019 Philippines edition as Kittipong took the gold with a new Games record of 67.56m.
