Where is the promised Socso coverage for housewives, asks Kula

Ipoh Barat MP M Kula Segaran says human resources minister M Saravanan had promised last year that the scheme would be implemented this January.

M Kula Segaran said the scheme could have been the perfect gift to all mothers in the country in conjunction with the Mother’s Day celebration today.
PETALING JAYA:
The human resources ministry has been asked to explain what has happened to the Social Security Organisation’s (Socso) Housewife Social Safety Scheme (SKSSR) that was promised last year.

Former human resources minister M Kula Segaran said that the scheme, which was spearheaded by the Pakatan Harapan government when it was in power, was supposed to have been implemented last year as promised by the current government.

“Human resources minister M Saravanan had promised to introduce the scheme in January this year but nothing has been done so far,” Kula Segaran said in a statement.

The scheme, he added, could have been the government’s perfect gift to all mothers in the country in conjunction with the Mother’s Day celebration today.

The Ipoh Barat MP urged Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to look into this matter immediately, arguing that “we must not let our wives and mothers down”.

“During the Pakatan Harapan administration, the draft legislation was completed and it would have covered millions of housewives.

“I can safely say that if PH was still in power, this protection and benefits would have reached all of them.”

Last year, the government announced the SKSSR scheme, which was aimed at providing a social security net for housewives and stay-at-home fathers by offering disability and invalidity protection, survivor’s pension, and constant-attendance allowance.

Facilities for physical or vocational rehabilitation and funeral benefits were also promised under the proposed SKSSR. The scheme, if implemented, would cover three million people in the country.

Under the plan, those signing up would have to contribute RM10 a month, which can be made in advance for a period of twelve months.

Saravanan had said then that the scheme would be implemented this January.

“Mothers are the greatest gift to humanity. They know no bounds in their love for us and know how to do only the best and sacrifice the most for their children,” Kula said.

“If the implementation had been announced in conjunction with Mother’s Day today, it would have been a perfect acknowledgment of their contributions to the nation.”
