Refugee made false report about robbery, say police

Brickfields police say he may be charged with making a false report as CCTV footage showed no robbery or altercation at the scene.

A 22-year-old man, said to be a refugee, had reported being robbed at 2am on Saturday by a group of men in Bangsar Baru.
PETALING JAYA:
Police have rejected a robbery complaint by a man who was later alleged to have suffered police harassment over his complaint. Instead, police said they would recommend that he be charged with making a false report.

Brickfields district police chief Amihizam Abdul Shukor said CCTV footage showed there was no robbery or altercation as claimed by the complainant in his police report.

He said police would recommend prosecution of the complainant.

Amihizam said in a statement that “CCTV footage showed the complainant and two women crossing the street from Hong Leong Bank, Jalan Telawi, to the car park. They were calm and not in a hurry”.

His statement came hours after a policy analyst, Tashny Sukumaran, had alleged on Twitter that the complainant, who has refugee status, and his girlfriend had suffered harassment from policemen when he made a report about the robbery.

Amihizam said the allegations about ill-treatment of the complainant were not true.

He said the robbery complaint was lodged by a 22-year-old man who said he was accosted outside a pub in Bangsar at 2am on Saturday by a group of men who asked him for money, hit him in the face and took his silver ring, gold necklace, a mobile phone and cash. He said he suffered RM6,000 in losses.

Amihizam said witnesses had said police were present at the scene, dispersing some drunken customers at the pub which the complainant had visited.

Tashny, who is a senior analyst at the Institute of Strategic and International Studies, alleged on Twitter that policemen at the station had accused the refugee of filing a false police report and had also tried to get him to withdraw the report.

She also claimed that the man was hauled to the police station for “further questioning” while his girlfriend suffered sexual remarks from certain personnel.
