Cops detain ’tekong darat’ and 20 Myanmar nationals after 7km chase

KOTA BHARU:
A local man suspected to be a “tekong darat” (ground coordinator) was arrested together with 20 undocumented migrants at Kampung Banggol Chica, Pasir Mas, near here this morning.

Pasir Mas police chief Nasaruddin M Nasir said a patrol car spotted a van being driven in a suspicious manner at Kampung Lubuk Kawah, Pasir Mas, at about 6.15am.

He said police ordered the driver of the van to stop but he sped off.

“After a 7km chase, the van driver, who had lost his way, finally stopped at the roadside of Kampung Banggol Chica, Pasir Mas.

“The arrested migrants were Myanmar nationals. There were 17 men and three women, aged between 17 and 40.

“All of them are suspected of entering the country illegally through the Malaysia-Thailand border,” he said in a statement today.
