Ministry task force to investigate death of houseman in Penang

Health minister Khairy Jamaluddin says the task force will investigate the culture of bullying which housemen and junior doctors have alleged.

PETALING JAYA:
The health ministry will be forming an independent task force to investigate the death of a houseman working at Penang Hospital recently.

In a post on Twitter, health minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the task force will also investigate the culture of bullying which housemen and junior doctors have alleged.

He added that he received a report about the houseman’s death from the relevant department head at Penang Hospital, and that the police are also investigating the matter.

The houseman fell to his death from his apartment on April 17, just three weeks after being posted to the hospital. In December 2020, a trainee doctor at Penang Hospital also fell to his death — three weeks after quitting his job.

Meanwhile, Penang state health committee chairman Norlela Ariffin today said she will convene a Penang health committee meeting soon to address issues faced by housemen and junior doctors, with the minutes of the meeting to be submitted to Khairy.

According to Norlela, she has received “invaluable insights” on issues faced by housemen and junior doctors and suggestions on how to revamp the system.

She said she hoped to see more transparency from the health ministry on such matters.
