PETALING JAYA:
A 14-year-old Rohingya detainee, who was injured in a crash at KM169 of the North-South Expressway after breaking out from the immigration detention centre in Bandar Baharu, Kedah, died yesterday.

This brings the toll to seven detainees who were killed when they dashed across the highway at the location last week.

Penang police chief Shuhaily Mohd Zain confirmed today the victim’s death, and said another crash victim, a 21-year-old man, was still being treated in hospital.

“Investigations into the incident are ongoing. We have recorded statements from several witnesses,” he said, according to a Harian Metro report.

Shuhaily added that the police were still on the hunt for another 61 Rohingya escapees, with the latest two arrests made in the state on Monday.

Asked whether the Rohingyas had escaped from Penang, Shuhaily said there was a possibility because the detention centre was close to two neighbouring states – Penang and Perak.

“What worries me is the possibility of the Rohingya detainees getting help from locals.

“It’s been a week since they escaped and they may have received help in terms of food, which is why they have been able to evade us,” he added.

A total of 528 Rohingya detainees escaped from the immigration detention centre after smashing the door and the grille at the depot on April 20.

However, six of them were killed when they were hit by a car while crossing a highway.
