Yuseri Yusoff and Anida Idrus called it a “big Ramadan victory”.
They told FMT they hoped it would lead to the truth behind what happened to their 15-month-old daughter, affectionately known as Baby Shifa, who died at a nursery last February, apparently in a cloth cradle.

“The inquest is to determine how and why my baby died,” Yuseri said.
“The police told us the case was never closed. If the inquest finds that Rania’s death was a result of foul play or murder, they will open another investigation.”
Anida said there were “1,001 questions” playing in her mind. “Rania was in good spirits when I sent her to the nursery but lifeless when I took her back.”
Two years ago, the couple had lost their second child. The birth of Rania in late 2020 thus brought light into their lives and that of their firstborn, seven-year-old Raysha Medina.
Anida and Raysha are receiving counselling for depression at a hospital. They deeply long for the cute baby who is no longer with them.

Anida said the hardest thing to forget was Rania’s behaviour a few days before her death.
“Rania would usually pull away from kisses, but for the few days before her death, she would instead reach out for kisses. I didn’t think then that this was her way of saying goodbye.”
The inquest will be held at the coroner’s court in Seremban 2.
Rania’s parents started a social media movement after her death. #Justiceforbabysyifaa now has 60,000 followers. The hashtag has been used by Yuseri as a platform to provide explanations and also demand answers from the authorities about the death of his child.
Seremban police chief Nanda Maarof was once reported to have said that Rania was found unconscious in a room at the nursery, with her head hanging from the cradle and the rest of her body inside it.
Nanda said that early investigations found that the baby was fed milk at 12.30pm and was left to sleep in the cradle inside a room with two other children.
