PETALING JAYA:
A serial robber has been charged with the murder of a policeman and then using the pistol he stole from the dead man to commit further crimes in Selangor, police said.

Criminal investigation department (CID) director Abdul Jalil Hassan said the man was charged in the Shah Alam High Court today with the murder of lance-corporal Valentino Mesa, who was killed at a police beat base five years ago.

The man was also charged with the murder of a security van driver and attempted murder of a guard, who was shot in the abdomen, in front of Hong Leong Bank, Puchong Prima, Subang Jaya, on March 11.

The suspect, who was arrested a day after the Puchong Prima robbery, was also charged with committing three other armed bank robberies that had occurred around Subang Jaya and Shah Alam.

He was also charged with the illegal possession of a semi-automatic Walther P99 pistol.

The pistol, which was stolen from the dead policeman, was in the possession of the criminal when he was arrested, Jalil said in a statement.

Previously, Selangor police chief Arjunaidi Mohamed said the pistol was believed to have been taken from Mesa, who was attacked and shot at the USJ Pinggiran community police beat base in 2017.
