Teacher in sexual assault charge told to enter defence

BUTTERWORTH:
A teacher at a government secondary school in Tasek Gelugor, who was charged last year with sexual assault of a Form Five student, was today ordered to enter his defence at the sessions court here today.

Aiyob Che Meh, who is also the school counsellor, was accused of sexually assaulting the then 17-year-old girl by groping her breasts, kissing her neck and touching her private parts in a counselling room at the school between July 4 and July 26, 2020. He had claimed trial.

Judge Noor Aini Yusof said the prosecution had succeeded in proving their case and ordered Aiyob to enter his defence. She set May 23 to hear his defence.

Aiyob 46, was charged under Sections 14(a) and 16 of the Sexual Offences Against Child Act 2017 for physical sexual assault, and violating the trust of caring for the child, respectively.

The sexual assault charge carries a maximum 20-year jail term and whipping, while the violation of trust charge has a maximum five-year jail term and two lashes of the rotan.

Deputy public prosecutor Syeqal Che Murat prosecuted, while Raveentharan Subramaniam represented Aiyob.
