Widow may get help over house auctioned without her knowledge

The bank says it will contact the new owner to resolve the problem as the school cleaner was not informed when the auction took place in 2020.

Tamil Selvi, a school cleaner in Ipoh, says the loan repayments were outstanding for three months in 2020 after her husband fell seriously ill.
PETALING JAYA:
CIMB has said it will try to resolve the issue of a widow whose house in Ipoh, Perak, was allegedly auctioned without her knowledge, Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) said today.

Tamil Selvi, a school cleaner, found out that her house was auctioned off in 2020 without her knowledge, despite being told by the bank in February last year that she and her late husband had settled their loan payments.

PSM’s deputy chairman S Arutchelvam said a representative from the bank had called Selvi and told her that it wanted to help by communicating with the new house owner to see how they could resolve the problem.

He also said that the party currently had no plans to start a donation drive for Selvi despite the many offers of help on social media.

“We do not want to create a welfare kind of situation since this is a rights issue. It is just about getting the bank to settle the issue,” he told FMT.

According to a Malaysiakini report, PSM had called for CIMB to repurchase the house and return it to Selvi, adding that she was willing to pay any outstanding loan amount.

However, the bank told the portal that it could not comment on matters regarding their customers.

CIMB said it was committed to ensuring fair treatment for its customers, which included following standard recovery procedures and engaging customers to address any issues they faced, Malaysiakini reported.
