4 killed in road crash along highway near Pendang

Four people were killed, including one who was burnt to death, in a road crash involving two cars at Km58.2 of the North-South Expressway (northbound) near Pendang early today.

Kedah fire and rescue department director Sayani Saidon said a fire team from the Pendang and Jalan Raja fire and rescue stations were sent to the scene following a distress call at 2.22am.

“The crash involved two cars and four victims. One of them was in a car which was 90% burnt and the three others were in the other car which turned turtle.

“The fire was put off at 2.56am before efforts were made to extricate the victims from the wreckage,” he said.

Work to extricate all the victims, including two men and a woman, aged between 26 and 52, was completed by 5.43am.

The victims in one of the cars were identified as Shahrin Hafi Omar, 49, Mohamad Syafiq Kassim, 26, and Arni, 52.

The identity of the charred victim, believed to be a man, has yet to be ascertained.

Pendang district police chief Arriz Sham Hamezah said the crash was believed to have occurred at 2.30am when the driver of one of the cars lost control. He said all died at the scene.

The impact caused one of the cars to crash into the road divider and the other to burst into flames, he added.
