PUTRAJAYA:
The Judicial and Legal Service Commission has appointed Federal Court chief registrar Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh as the new solicitor-general (SG) to replace Abdul Razak Musa who retired last month.

Attorney-General (AG) Idrus Harun confirmed with FMT that Terrirudin would assume his new role on March 25.

The SG assists the AG and is empowered by law to perform any of the functions that can be carried out by the AG. This is provided for under Section 40A of the Eleventh Schedule of the Federal Constitution.

Under subsection 376(2) of the Criminal Procedure Code, the SG possesses all the powers of a deputy public prosecutor and acts as a public prosecutor in the absence or inability of the AG to act.

The SG is also responsible for civil matters, interviews, intakes, transfers, postings and promotions of officers and other duties directed by the AG.

Terrirudin, 53, will be assisted by Siti Zainab Omar, the current SG II.

A law graduate from Universiti Malaya, Terrirudin joined the judicial and legal service in 1995, serving in postings such as senior assistant registrar of the High Court of Malaya, magistrate in Sibu, sessions court judge in Kuala Lumpur, and special officer to the chief justice of the Federal Court.

He had also served as state prosecution director in Negeri Sembilan, deputy head of civil division (management), and as the legal adviser to the Kedah state government.

On May 3, 2019, he was appointed chief registrar of the Federal Court.
