Self-test kits a waste of money, MP tells govt

Tumpat MP Che Abdullah Mat Nawi calls for Putrajaya to stop urging people to carry out self-tests when the results are not as accurate as the RT-PCR test.

PETALING JAYA:
The government should no longer advise the public to use the Covid-19 self-test kits because the results are often inaccurate, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Che Abdullah Mat Nawi (PAS-Tumpat) said it was a waste of money for people to keep using the RTK-antigen (RTK-Ag) self-test kits when the results are not as accurate as the RT-PCR (PCR) test.

“If the self-test is not accurate, then it’s better for the government to stop advising the public to use it. This is a big waste of money for consumers,” he said.

Che Abdullah said he experienced this personally when he showed symptoms for three days but tested negative using a self-test kit. However, his PCR test was later found to be positive.

He asked domestic trade and consumer affairs minister Alexander Nanta Linggi on his ministry’s measures to tackle the issue because many people had gone through the same experience as him.

Nanta acknowledged that the RTK-Ag self-test kit was not as accurate as the PCR test, but said he did not have the medical expertise to provide more answers.

“This is not under my ministry’s purview,” he said.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Harun also said the issue was best taken up with the health ministry.
